We had not been officially "trying", but we had certainly been talking about it more and more and wanting it more and more (and now we have somewhere to put a kid!) and this past May I was a little late, but that wasn't terribly unusual. So May 29th I took a test and it was negative. We were both bummed. The days go by and I still haven't gotten my period so finally one week later I take another test. These tests I had gotten free from a website and it was just a little strip that either showed one line (negative) or two lines (positive). When I took the second test it definitely looked different than the first, so I called out to Lenny and we were both excited, but he didn't trust the free test, so that day he went to the pharmacy and bought the most expensive, fancy digital test. And the next morning I got this (sorry it's blurry, but you get the idea):

I had already told my mother and my sister about the test the day before, so later that day my sister called and uttered this classic line: "You were supposed to call me after your first morning pee!" I told her it was confirmed and Lenny told his family, but it didn't completely sink in yet.
The following week I had my first appointment with the Certfified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and was introduced to the delightful experience of the vaginal ultrasound. I told her I didn't think I was very far along even though my last period was the end of April, and we didn't see much of anything on the ultrasound. So I was sent to the hospital for blood tests to check the hormone levels and RH and told to come back 2 weeks later. So, 2 weeks later we got this:
This was an exciting day, to finally see yes, there really is a baby in there, and find out how far along we really were (6 weeks, 6 days according to the measurement of the fetus on the ultrasound). The CNM had printed out a copy of the picture and given it to me, but Lenny didn't realize that's what she gave me, so he asked her, "Can we get a copy of that picture?" Isn't that the cutest thing? She printed out another one and gave him his own copy. After that visit, I had to get more blood work done and come back in 2 weeks. Two days later we drove all the way out to upstate NY to see the sister out there who does Health Kinesiology. She has done A LOT of prenatal work so it was important to me that she checked everything out too. She said everything was fine, which was very reassuring.
Two weeks later I had my (hopefully) last vaginal ultrasound and we got our second picture:
I thought it looked like a bunny (of course I have had bunnies on the brain). We could see the heart beating, which was, again, reassuring, and she told me to come back in FOUR weeks! Yea!That was last week. So now you're all caught up with what we've been up to. I've been tired and nauseous so I haven't been doing much else, but three weeks until the end of my first trimester. I can't wait!
I am so happy for you both and really enjoyed seeing the ultra sound images...you're right, it does look like a bunny. Is that how you will refer to the baby until you know if it's a boy or a girl and can call it by it's name? We called Allen "Peanut" until we knew he was Allen.

Bunny seems like a weird name for a baby. The CNM thinks ultrasounds at that stage look like jelly beans. That's kinda cute.
ReplyDeleteI'm not suggesting that you NAME the baby Bunny just call him/her that instead of calling it "it." Jelly Bean is cute, too, and appropriate...I can see that. Read that baby a story for me, okay?
ReplyDeleteHey...Can you let us know a due date? I suppose I could try to calculate it by myself...but that seems like more work and I'm unlikely to get it right.
ReplyDeleteThanks,
K
