Dealing With Doctors
Tomorrow Lenny and I meet with a pediatrician for a "consult." There are 3 things I want to discuss: 1) Obviously - No Blood; 2) Circumcision - Wondering if he would do it on the 8th day or if they only do it in the hospital right after the birth or if it even matters; 3) Vaccines. Any tips on talking with doctors about this stuff? I don't believe any of the moms with young ones in our congregation go to this particular doctor, but the CNM recommended him as probably being more flexible with the vaccine schedule, something I don't think the other moms have really questioned. Have you gone along with the recommended vaccine schedules?

I went along with the recommended vaccine schedule, after doing some research in the Watchtower Library and the sources it sited (WHO, CDC, etc.). We have had no issues with the vaccines. Of course, with some he's experienced a minor fever and some lethargy to go along with it, but for the most part, all is well. However, if you would like to go with a modified schedule, my suggestion is that you go well-prepared (with your schedule printed out). And be firm. You're the parents. You decide what's best for your child, not the pediatrician. Hopefully, he'll be cooperative. When I have expressed concerns to my current pediatricians they have always been patient and reassuring with me. So I'm sure that's what you'll find as well.
ReplyDeleteThe no-blood thing may be partially covered in your paperwork. I've never had an issue with it other than bringing it to the Pediatrician's attention in addition to writing it on the paperwork.
As far as the circumcision, we did it in the hospital, and he was fine. My OB/GYN did it too, so I'm not sure if in your case the pediatrician does it.
Let us know how the appointment goes!!

Thanks Leggy! That was reassuring to hear. I didn't even think of researching vaccines in the WT library, but I did print out the little blurb about circumcision from the Insight book and I have printed out the vaccine schedule from 1983. We'll see how it goes!
ReplyDeleteWe have also followed the recommended vaccine schedule. We did have an in-depth conversation with our pediatrician before his last round of shots at 6 months about the correlation of vaccines with autism. She reassured us that there is no scientific proof that they are related. Of course, she's a dr. so she probably has to say that but we felt what she told us was very comforting. She also said that there are early signs, and judging by our little one's current motor skills, etc., he is fine. We also had the circumcision done in the hosp too. I thought they did it the day you are released, but they did his the very next day after he was born. And we included the blood issue in both his and my files. They actually made me bring in a copy of my worksheet of what i feel is acceptable for my file which was useful when I ended up having a c-section. Sorry so long...just giving my experiences so far. Lol

ReplyDeleteWe also had Kai circumcised in the hospital. I believe the obgyn has to do it because they are classified as surgeons and the pediatricians are not. As far as the vaccines, we decided to spread Kai's out a little. To tell you the truth, we just couldn't come to a clear decision for his 2 month appt, so we skipped them. After a little more thought, we decided to do hib and prevnar at 3 mos and dtap and polio will happen at his 4 mos appt. I just felt more comfortable limiting him to no more than 2 injections per visit. We decided to pass on the hep b (we didn't see any way he was at risk for it considering the way the disease is transmitted) and the rotavirus (this is a drink to basically prevent severe cases of diarrhea). Kai's dr was comfortable with this because there is such a low risk in our country of a well cared for baby's diarrhea getting too out of hand. Hope that helps. Of course, its a personal decision and just to let you know, Kai did well with his first round of shots- no fever, maybe just a little cranky, but that could have been from gas :)
